NINTH KEY (L-R): Ekoh, Lø Spirit
One thing I personally love about music is the way artists use the platform to express a range of emotions and feelings, using their abilities to share their stories and thoughts with the utmost honesty and truth. Whether this is be moments of happiness and joy or pain and sadness, music is an extremely powerful tool when done right. Earlier this year, I was introduced to a new artist called Lø Spirit (the brainchild of musician/producer Joshua Landry) by my partner and was met with an artist that puts his honest, vulnerable self out there for all to embrace. Now, we see him join forces with hip-hop artist Ekoh - together forming the project Ninth Key. And with that, we also find ourselves with a brand new, incredibly powerful track called 'Happy Feels Like'.
The track itself feels like something from the earlier years of Linkin Park, combining elements of heavy rock, metalcore and rap to create a sound that is haunting and full of variety. Throwing me back to the 'Hybrid Theory' and 'Meteroa' eras, Ninth Key balance emotionally charged riffs with thought-provoking vocals, jumping between a clean and gritty tone to grip the listener from the moment the track starts. The builds from verse to chorus flow smoothly, hitting you with enough force and energy that will leave you wanting more as the track progresses.
What stands out in particular is the message behind the track. Speaking about the track, Lø Spirit states;
'Happy is not money, material things, success or fame. Happiness is what you make out of the little moments and memories with those you love and the gift of waking up every morning with air in your lungs and the opportunity to look around'
This message alone hits rather deep, as we all strive to find some form of happiness in the chaos that is modern times...and sometimes its easy to lose sight of what true happiness means. The lyrics also stress this sentiment, emphasising how we can find ourselves focusing on the wrong things when trying to find happiness when we just need to simply appreciate what we have in front of us to find the path to that happiness.
When you listen to both artists - either individually or collaboratively, neither Ekoh or Lø Spirit are afraid to put their most vulnerable selves forward to share their stories and/or experiences, and their work through Ninth Key further showcases this vulnerability. As much as the powerful riffs and energy from the music will grab you, the emotionally-heavy and engaging lyrics will also find a way to captivate you - echoing in your mind long after the track has finished.
