Now let's all be honest here - social media SUCKS no matter how you use it. The constant need to beat the algorithms, having to edit your preferences so you don't see certain content, the ever on-going battle of seeing people argue about everything and anything whilst you know they're sat at home in their underwear...its safe to say that Social Media can create a rather toxic and dangerous environment, one that can unintentionally shape us into negative thinking and harsh views on world.
Of course, the irony here is that Social Media is also the reason for this next review (as well as many of my others in the past) as it introduced me to a new band that are providing a very open and in-your-face take on the idea of the above concept. Hailing from Cumbria, TALLBOY are a metal band that say it exactly how it is with their latest single - 'Fuck The Algorithm'
The first single from their upcoming EP 'Chasing Ghosts' (due for release on August 7th), the band combine elements of Nu-Metal, Post Hardcore and Metalcore to bring a track that isn't afraid to say exactly how the band feel about the influence Social Media has on our lives. The drums initiate a casual build up before we're swiftly met with a harsh 'FUCK THE ALGORITHM' and the full thunder of the band hits us. What I love over the duration of the track is the mix-up of approaches to the music - the difference in tempo, what instruments are being played, even how the vocals are handled between clean and harsh. You're left on the edge of your seat as you find yourself unsure what's to come with each passing second as the song continues to play.
The constant shift back and forth isn't messy either, as TALLBOY manage to keep these changes swift, clean and precise. They manage to maintain the element of the combined genres together without the song becoming a convoluted mess that has you wondering what type of genre they're trying to be - rather they're combining elements from the earlier mentioned genres to create their own take on Metal whilst also using it to express the anger and frustration at the subject they've chosen for the song. From heavier, in-your-face sections to clean, melodic jumps - this is a track that will easily appeal to anyone who decides to give it a spin.
As someone who has to utilise social media on a regular basis for both personal and business matters, I am the first to moan about how frustrating and annoying it can be. But I will also be the first to say there are positives to this annoying little tool - in this case, introducing me to an artist that has clearly a lot of potential in the vast growing grassroots scene and one that can leave little earworms in the mind days after hearing it for the first time.
