One of the main themes I’ve picked up on and mentioned a few times during my reviews this year is that 2025 has been a year of evolution for the bands on the scene. Whether it’s the big hitters releasing blasting records or the grassroots scene showing their maturity in their releases, everyone is puling out all the stops to show how they’ve matured and grown.
This sentiment takes us to Nottingham metal group Firmament who have released their latest track ‘New Tomorrow’, the follow up to their 2024 release ‘Avatar’.
Before we dwell into this geezer’s thoughts on the music, I have to take a minute to bring attention to the track’ artwork. As much as I love me a good bit of musical fun, I can’t ignore how incredible the artwork looks. When compared to the band’s previous artwork (which was clever in its own right to fit the song’s message), this is yet another sign that the band are evolving in how they handle what exactly it means to be a band, creating not only powerful music but having eye-catching artwork to help draw your attention. To one Mark Leary of ASYLUMseventy7, you have my adoration for your work!
So, back to the music. The song shows just how much the quintet has been busy since their last release ‘Avatar’, crafting and improving on their skills as a band. Musically, the track feels like a blend of Folk Metal, Prog Rock and a splash of Symphonic Metal. The intro of the song showcases not only the band’s ability to dial it down when needed but also shows how haunting vocalist Adele can be with her voice. This slowly builds up into a riff that feels like the lovechild of Alter Bridge and Coheed & Cambria.
One thing (well…another thing at this point in the review) that sticks out for me is the 6-minute run time. In modern times, 6+ minutes can seem like a lengthy track and you have to ensure you keep the track ‘fresh’ for that duration. Firmament saw this challenge and did it perfectly. The track doesn’t get stale at any point. There’s a change in the riff here and there that will keep you drawn in. Throw in some incredible guitar harmonies and a powerful rhythm section, ‘New Tomorrow’ is a sign that Firmament have a lot of potential hidden away and are only just scratching the surface.
With ‘Avatar’, I stated it was a debut track the band should have been proud of. ‘New Tomorrow’ is simply a testament to my previous motion and the band should be equally proud of a follow up that’s not only a pleasure for the ears, but also a sign of how much they’ve grown and evolved together in the last year.
