[Single Review] Kicking off their new era with a bang, metalcore outfit BURY TOMORROW hit the ground running with new single 'Sx'

One of the biggest challenges any band will face is 'how do push ourselves after this release? What can we do to take the next step forward?'. Of course, this challenge only becomes bigger when you take factors such as a band's duration and the ever-changing scene into account. Do you rely on what you've always known and hope it sits with the fans? Or do you take that risk and dabble in new territories and/or elements that will push your creativity towards something new? 

For British metalcore outfit Bury Tomorrow, this is something they have addressed in their latest single 'Sx' (short for 'Symptom'), the first single under their new, independent record label DEA†H RECORDS.

Whilst this track maintains the roots of the Metalcore genre that Bury Tomorrow have embraced over the last 20 years,'Sx' also sees them dabbling in outside genres to create a fresh, new sound for the band as they kick off their new era. Utilising elements of industrial music and a small splash of darkwave, Bury Tomorrow have created a track that is heavy and brutal - making them sound just as fresh as when they first erupted on the scene all those years ago. This isn't a band trying to reinvent themselves, rather this is a band that is trying to push themselves further at what feels like a pivotal point in their career - going fully independent and being able to explore new levels of creativity to help push them sonically.

Don't get me wrong - this is still the Bury Tomrrow  that we know and love, but its always interesting to see how bands adapt newer elements from other genres into an already established sound. It can either be a risky move that can leave fans thinking 'ey?', or it can be a move that excites fans and makes them eager to see how things will progress. In this case - it definitely feels like the latter, especially based on fan comments so far. Musically and lyrically, the track is devastatingly heavy - even the clean vocals sound rougher than before whilst still ensuring they maintain that melodic element within the song. The harsh vocals dive into a much darker territory and produce something with more stab and oomph, and of course instrumentally the band sounds more united than before as they ensure 'Sx' is filled with groove and power from start to finish.

Bury Tomorrow has certainly kicked off their new era with enthusiasm and a fire that burns brighter than ever. The biggest question we have to ask is that now that the band have lifted the lid and shown us what they can do, how much more evolution are we going to hear as they continue forward? For me personally, Bury Tomorrow have always been an exciting and incredible act within the British Metalcore scene, so I'll be eager to see what comes within this new era of their career.
