For today’s review, we’re heading down to good old Kent to visit a band that have been nestled in the scene since 2014 and continue to push themselves out in the scene. A band that utilises an old school in your face style musically, Spreading The Disease have been busy in recent times. Signing a deal with AMG/Universal Records, storming the stages of the UK and now preparing to push their next EP ‘Purgatory Carnival’ out onto the world.

Kickstarting with ‘Addicted’, the band open the EP with a bass riff that is reminiscent of old school Sepultura and Korn vibes before bringing the hammer down and unleashing heavy metal goodness in your ears. The track is filled with an infectious energy throughout both from the thunderous instrumentals and the powerful vocal work, reflecting the title as you find yourself becoming addicted to the music and lost in the vibes. ‘Addicted’ may only be the first track, but it sets the bar high for the band who are as eager as ever to show their power and energy.

As the track rings out, the pace is continued as we charge into ‘Fissure’, a track that feels like a long-lost Slipknot track from their self-titled days. This time, the band utilising an electronic style underneath their usual heavy style. This vibe shows us that the band are more than happy to divulge into different styles and techniques to build their sound whilst still maintaining their iconic sound.

We’re next met with ‘Warblade’. Whilst we return briefly to the Sepultura-esque sounds as before, there is tinge of classic heavy metal underneath. There’s not much else I can comment on at this point, it’s simply a track that ticks the right boxes and continues the same energy we’ve had from the start. It highlights the band can maintain the pace across all their music whilst ensuring each track stands out in their own way. For me, it’s simply the ‘old school’ vibes that click as we all love the older sounds that helped build the modern scene.

Reaching the end of the EP, we are met with a different side of the band. A slower introduction that is very Iron Maiden in approach, the group once again show they can jump between styles and ideas to bring their creations to life. It isn’t long before we’re thrown back into the heavy vibes of course, but ‘Purgatory Carnival’ is somewhat slower in comparison to its kin which makes a nice change of pace overall. Don’t let this slow pace fool you though, there’s still much thunder and power from the group as they see the EP through to its last note

Overall, what appeals most about this EP is its ability to dabble in the older styles of metal whilst still keeping it fresh and modern for its audience. This is an EP that could easily slide into the 90s era of metal with its Sepultura energy, but it one that holds its own in modern days when compared to genres such as Metalcore. It also demonstrates how Spreading The Disease are a force to be reckoned with and continue to be as they enter their 12th year as a band. ‘Purgatory Carnival’ is simply put another solid addition to the group’s catalogue and one that shows a band who are proud of what they do.
