DEAD REYNOLDS (L-R): Luke, Zena, Rossco, Ben, Dom
After visiting all kinds of places in my reviews lately, its always nice to 'return home' and focus on a band that's right on my doorstep. We shift focus to Peterborough, which is home to a few hidden gems within the music scene such as Austin Gold, Keep This Up, Break Them amongst some of the recognisable names within the area. All equally hard-working, all pushing themselves in their respective genres within the rock and metal community.
The band we're visiting today are alt-rock group Dead Reynolds, a band I have not only seen live a couple of times but have also had the joy of sharing stage with with my own band. The quintet are a fast growing name in the area due to their energetic performances and equally energetic tracks. After teasing us with singles over the last couple of months, the group's hard work has come to fruition with the release of their new album 'Yellow Weather Warning' - an album they themselves describe as 'loud, bright, in your face and relentless'.
Honestly, I can't disagree with them. From the minute you hit go, you're faced with a hurricane of fast paced, balls-to-the-walls rock that leaves you wanting more after each song. Each track is treated as an anthem in their own right by the band, brimming with energy and pizzazz that tickle the brain in a fun, exciting way. The band provide their spin on alt rock with elements of nu-metal subtly woven in, a blend of genres that the band appear more than comfortable and confident in.
The mix and production of these tracks are crisp and clear, meaning you can take in each instrument and the vocals without anything being lost or sounding muddy. The time keeping of the booming drums blend nicely with the groove laid down by the bass, whilst the guitars meld intricate riffs and chunky riffs to give the band that extra big blast of sound from start to finish. Throw in vocals that are part heavy rock, part 'cheeky chappy', the band has created an ideal rock cocktail that's not too bland but not completely reliant on stale formulas or cliches that will keep the fans hooked.
Of course - we can't ignore the infamous cover of Robbie Williams' 'Let Me Entertain You'. Covers can be a hit or miss factor depending on a band's take. Whilst the original is iconic in its own way, Dead Reynolds are able to make the track their own and inject with a fresh shot of adrenaline and energy to make it stand out from the original. Its not a simple 'copy and paste' cover, its a band showing their creativity and adding their own vibes on top.
So do the band hit the description they gave the album? They certainly do. 'Yellow Weather Warning' contains a rather infectious energy, one that I've witnessed when the band play the tracks live at their shows. They get people off their feet and out their comfort zones and lose themselves in the moment, dancing and singing along to the tracks. Most of all - you can tell that the band had a lot of fun creating this album. There is a sense of enjoyment and joy as they came together and wrote the tracks. An album can be an exhausting task but Dead Reynolds have cracked their attempt wide open and left plenty of room to grow and expand with whatever comes next in their music
