Every now and then, someone drops a track in my inbox that’s a break from the norm. I don’t hide the fact that I love my metal, especially tracks that sit in the Metalcore genre, but you can’t help but enjoy a brief breakaway from what you know and have the chance to dabble in something a little different genre wise.

Once again chatting with Metathetic/Shadow Promotions’ own Jamie, she waved a little track in my face that is not only different for me genre wise, but is also the debut of a new band that I’ve not come across yet except for seeing the name float about on socials. Today, we’re going back to the good ol’ pop punk vibes as we dive into ‘Obstacles of Life’, the debut track of Yorkshire based one-man band Raised Reckless.

Before even opening the track, the artwork is a nostalgia-inducing piece of eye candy. Channelling the vibes of the 00s Warped Tour, it gave off Blink-182/Good Charlotte/Sum 41 vibes, all of which are bands that were regular contenders in playlists growing up in the teens. Checkered background, hand drawn stars and of course the little broken heart symbol – the artwork instantly tells you what kind of energy Raised Reckless is creating within the music and style the band is going for.

Musically, this track draws heavily from the likes of Blink-182 and +44. The track itself reminded me of a combination of ‘Adam’s Song’ and ‘Lillian’, filled with punchy and energetic riffs that focuses on a serious theme and message. The track isn’t reinventing the genre it falls in, but it does serve as a reminder that serious messages can be present throughout any genre within the scene. The song conveys a message that we don’t have to let the negative obstacles take over our lives and that we have the power to overcome these obstacles and turn them into positives – something that is relevant within the world right now.

For a debut track, Raised Reckless have set themselves up in a way that provides a good balance for any fans that discover them – an introductory track that shows the gives enough taste of the band’s tone and vibes, whilst also leaving plenty of space to expand and grow in their sound and approach to the Pop Punk genre. Combining nostalgic vibes with modern themes, Raised Reckless has the pieces in place to push themselves further over the year.
