Lamb Of God's latest release “Sepsis” has the metal universe divided in conflict whilst paying homage with a poetic nod to their hometown Richmond’s underground scene. “Sepsis” is the first original release since the album drop back in 2022 of “Omens” and was released under Century Media Records, thus also marking their debut single with the label following their official departure from Epic Records in 2023.
The question we’re all asking though is - is it a banger or does it fall short of the audio equivalent of stepping on a lego brick? (not kink shaming here, if standing on lego is your thing.)
My opinion, well I can’t say I hated it but I couldn’t really rate it the magnum opus of the Lamb Of God releases. It had its moments where I thought “hell yeah, this is good” but it wasn’t necessarily consistent throughout the song. Now, hear me out - it’s still a good track however I feel there is much left to be desired. “Sepsis” is aggressive, sludgy and and leans into a more mid-to-slow tempo rather than the usual high level of energy and onslaught that ensues typically giving more of a flirtatious dance with the generic thrash metal vibe. Vocally it packs a punch with the signature sound that fans love and adore from Randy Blythe but I just feel that it just has ‘something’ missing although I can’t quite put my finger on it exactly but just finishes shy of the finishing line.
With the official video giving nostalgic 1999 Blair Witch Project vibes it’s definitely something I can get behind. I’ve always loved a bit of drama and a homage to camcorder VHS DIY horrors when it comes to a good music video, although with the internet in the state that it is at the moment I was half expecting that AI generated Bigfoot to pop up mid way and start spouting some “gen Z” lingo that I would have to decipher.
Overall, I’d say this track was a great release and paid absolute perfect homage to the underground scene in Richmond, Virginia. It was dirty, it was abrasive but unfortunately in terms of releases from Lamb of God on a larger scale - I wouldn’t rate it as one of my favourite tracks by these metal titans. Am I looking forward to the future and what it will bring from the guys? Hell yeah - but I can fully understand why this track has left people divided in their opinion. With the confirmation that a new full-length album is in development hopefully it won’t be long till we’re able to see what direction the band will choose to go into. It’s exciting times for Lamb Of God fans and hopefully the official release date will come soon.
